The project The Fragile Lightness of Liminality focuses on states of transition or in-between spaces in which processes, narratives, and discourses are still taking shape, shifting from one state to another, and are slowly being noticed and recognized. It looks at ignored, forgotten, and neglected parts of cultural space that are marginalized due to their inconvenience, complexity, or perceived lack of trendiness. The project emphasizes transformation as an uncertain yet creative state.

Spaces and territorial transitions that highlight the relationships between the private and the public, the interior and the exterior, and the subjective and the objective underscore this complexity, particularly by drawing parallels with social transformation.
The project will present works by three international artists – Viktor Timofeev (LV/USA), Laura Gozlan (FR), and Robin Levy (USA) – who will engage in a dialogue with Kuldīga’s urban environment, bringing the concept of liminality to the forefront. The project’s program will be complemented by an international symposium, which will serve as a platform to bring together talented thinkers and experts from various disciplines – architecture, memory institutions, visual arts, anthropology, and other fields – to discuss issues of liminality in the context of current global crises, war, and change.
